Differences Between HDPE and LDPE Geomembranes & Selection Guide

Core Differences Between HDPE and LDPE Geomembranes + Selection Recommendations
I. Differences in Raw Materials and Performance

1. HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene Geomembrane)

  • High density, high crystallinity, strong rigidity, high hardness, puncture resistance, and excellent tensile strength
  • Resistant to acids and alkalis, resistant to sewage corrosion, anti-aging, resistant to low temperatures, and has good seepage prevention stability
  • High temperature resistance: can withstand around 80℃ for short periods, and hot-melt welding is strong and leak-proof
  • Disadvantages: Poor flexibility, easily hardens when bent at low temperatures, and bending during construction is not as smooth as with LDPE

2. LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene Geomembrane)

  • Low density, soft texture, extremely high ductility, and high tear elongation
  • Good low-temperature toughness, high adhesion to frozen soil and irregular pitted surfaces
  • Disadvantages: Low hardness, poor puncture resistance, poor high-temperature resistance (easily softens at >50℃), weak chemical resistance, prone to creep, and easily stretches and thins and leaks after long-term burial

II. Simplified Parameter Comparison
Item HDPE Geomembrane LDPE Geomembrane
Hardness: Stiff, Soft
Puncture Resistance: Excellent, Poor
Chemical Resistance: Strong (Landfill, Sewage, Chemical Pond), Average (Ordinary Freshwater)
Heat Resistance: High, Low
Elongation: Low, Extremely High
Cost: High, Cheap
